Optimism
An Ethereum Layer 2 using optimistic rollup technology. Optimism developed the OP Stack — the modular framework underlying Base, World Chain, and other chains in the broader "Superchain" vision.
What Optimism does
Optimism is one of the largest Ethereum Layer 2 optimistic rollups:
- Bundles transactions off-chain and posts compressed data and proofs to Ethereum.
- Optimistic execution — assumes valid by default; allows fraud-proof challenges.
- Lower fees than Ethereum L1.
- EVM compatibility — Ethereum contracts deploy with no code changes.
It launched in late 2021 and has grown to be one of the dominant L2s by total value locked.
OP Stack
Optimism's broader contribution beyond its own chain:
- OP Stack — open-source modular framework for building rollups.
- Used by Base — Coinbase's L2.
- Used by World Chain (Worldcoin), Mode, Zora, others.
- "Superchain" vision — multiple OP Stack chains sharing security and infrastructure.
OP Stack has become the dominant framework for new Ethereum L2 launches. This positions Optimism not just as an L2 but as broader infrastructure.
OP token
The OP token serves several functions:
- Governance — controls Optimism Collective decisions.
- Token House — token-weighted voting body.
- Citizens' House — non-token-weighted body for public-goods funding decisions.
- Two-house governance — explicit attempt to balance plutocratic and democratic considerations.
The dual governance model is distinctive among L2 governance designs.
RetroPGF — retroactive public goods funding
Optimism's signature governance experiment:
- Quarterly funding rounds distribute OP to projects deemed valuable to the ecosystem.
- Retroactive judgments — fund projects that already produced value.
- Citizens House decides — non-token-weighted votes.
- Total distributions in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
RetroPGF has emerged as one of the more interesting applications of L2-controlled treasury funding for ecosystem development.
Major Optimism activity
Some key data:
- TVL in billions — among the largest L2s by total value locked.
- Active DeFi — Uniswap, Aave, Curve, others have substantial deployments.
- Daily transactions — significant though typically less than Base for consumer activity.
- Bridging volume — substantial flows from Ethereum mainnet.
Sequencer dynamics
Like other major L2s:
- Centralized sequencer initially. Optimism Foundation operated alone.
- Decentralization roadmap — gradual transition to permissionless sequencing.
- Fault proofs — fully on-chain dispute resolution. Implementation complete more recently than Optimism's launch.
The centralized sequencer remains a theoretical concern but operational issues have been minimal.
Major upgrades
A few worth knowing:
- Bedrock (June 2023) — major architecture upgrade improving efficiency and EVM equivalence.
- EIP-4844 integration (March 2024) — dramatically reduced data costs through Ethereum blobs.
- Fault proofs — on-chain dispute resolution.
- Various OP Stack improvements — shared with broader Superchain.
OP Stack ecosystem
Beyond the main Optimism chain:
- Base (Coinbase) — uses OP Stack; largest by daily transactions.
- World Chain (Worldcoin) — humans-only chain.
- Mode — yield-focused L2.
- Zora — creator-focused L2.
- Various others.
The combined OP Stack ecosystem is one of the largest in crypto by total user base and activity.
Risks specific to Optimism
A few:
- Centralized sequencer — operational reliability risk.
- Smart-contract risk in OP Stack itself.
- Competition with other L2s for activity.
- Regulatory exposure to OP token classification.
- Token economics — OP unlock schedule produces ongoing dilution.
What individuals should know
For users:
- Optimism is reasonably mature for most DeFi and consumer use.
- Transaction costs are dramatically lower than Ethereum mainnet.
- Cross-L2 transfers to Base and other OP Stack chains improving.
- Withdrawal to Ethereum typically takes 7 days through canonical bridge.
For investors:
- OP token has both governance and economic dimensions.
- OP Stack adoption affects long-term value beyond the main Optimism chain.
- Token unlocks create ongoing supply pressure.
Optimism has evolved from "another L2" to "infrastructure provider for many L2s." Its OP Stack adoption by major players (Base, World Chain) has positioned it as more than just a single chain — it's a broader ecosystem play with implications for Ethereum's overall scaling roadmap.
